Their goal at that point is to try to gather evidence to help them deny your claim. You might want to think that they’re trying to gather evidence so that they can correct the problem and protect people in the future, but in fact, that is not their goal at that point. Their goal in talking to you in the first place is to establish from their perspective that they had no responsibility in preventing this injury.
It is not a good idea. Do not talk to the store or property owner, their insurance carrier, or their lawyer, or any representatives on their behalf. The best thing you can do is get an attorney involved to represent you immediately who can help with those communications with the responsible party.
